Triton

Triton USB Audio - Standard
Triton V2 Standard

The Triton is a USB/Audio interface intended for acoustical measurements. Several models are available that differ in input configuration. The Standard model is provided with unpowered inputs and RCA sockets, while the IEPE (Integrated Electronics Piezo Electric) model is provided with BNC sockets and constant-current (4.5 mA) powered inputs.
The Standard model Triton V2 is a drop-in replacement for the original Triton.

IEPE is also known as ICP® (Integrated Circuit Piezoelectric, registered by PCB Group, Inc.) and DeltaTron® (registered by Brüel & Kjær Sound & Vibration Measurement A/S).

The Triton was designed with Dirac in mind, but can also be used in many other applications. The USB Plug & Play architecture and the compatibility with native Microsoft™ Windows™ and Apple Computer™ OS X drivers enable instant use without proprietary driver installation.

The features that make the Triton particularly suited to acoustic measurements with Dirac, are the overload indicator and the lack of any volume controls that could interfere with repeatable calibrated measurements.
The IEPE model allows the direct connection of a measurement microphone and thus removes the need to use to an SLM as measurement front-end.

The Triton USB-C socket at the backside is connected to the PC by the enclosed USB-A/C cable. The Triton will appear as USB Audio CODEC in the list of playback and recording devices.

The white (standard model) or yellow (IEPE model) gain labels indicate the factory set input gains.

With a microphone connected to the IEPE input, the input gain determines the effective measurement range. The table below shows the measurement range as a function of input gain for several common microphone sensitivities.

SPL measuring ranges for 1 kHz sine wave. All values in dB.
Input Gain S = 20 mV/Pa S = 30 mV/Pa S = 40 mV/Pa S = 50 mV/Pa
0 46 ... 131 42 ... 127 40 ... 125 38 ... 123
10 36 ... 121 32 ... 117 30 ... 115 28 ... 113
20 26 ... 111 22 ... 107 20 ... 105 18 ... 103
30 16 ... 101 12 ... 97 10 ... 95 8 ... 93

The default gain for the Standard model is 0 dB (on both inputs). For the IEPE model the default gain is 10 dB (on both inputs).

  1. A measurement report on the input and output full scale voltage levels at 1 kHz is provided with each individual Triton.
  2. Because system measurements are often performed by generating an excitation signal at the output, while recording the system response at the input, measurement system quality parameters depend on the Triton input + output chain. Therefore, these parameters are given for a loopback configuration where the output signals are fed back to the inputs using a special converter preserving the respective full scale levels.

Attenuator cable

The Triton package contains a Triton USB audio interface, an LP03 leather pouch, a CA05 USB-A/C cable, 2 RCA/BNC socket adapters (Standard model) or 2 BNC/RCA socket adapters (IEPE model), a Quick Guide and a measurement report.

With the standard Triton model you can attenuate the input voltage or to increase the input impedance, by using an input series resistor, which forms a voltage divider with the Triton input impedance. The table below shows the attenuation for some standard E96 series resistors. You can mount yourself resistors in the cable plugs, or order CA06-AAC attenuator cables from Acoustics Engineering.
The table below contains the coding for the table. E.g. A red cable with an attenuation of 3 dB has the ID CA06-03R.
